A true friend.

It’s a true friend who will tell you the truth, whether or not it may hurt your feelings, because it’s for your own good. 

A fake friend will only ever tell you what you want to hear, will never challenge you (especially challenge you to be a better person), and it’s usually to stay on your good side for their own gain. Don’t be surprised when they walk out of your life, or when you find that your friendship had no foundation to begin with.

A real friend will help you reach the good. It’s not always easy, not always comfortable, but in the end, I want to be a better person because of the friendships I have. We have to build each other up. If no one ever told me that anything was wrong, or never called me out on something, I’d be in a pretty bad place, without even realizing it.

I don’t always do such a good job of being a true friend, myself. But I’m trying. 

Just because someone challenges you or calls you out on something it doesn’t mean they’re out to get you. It seems backwards, but these are the ones who are probably your best friends. It’s because they care about you. Try to remember that.
